Life Skills Class Garden Grant

From teacher Lisa Labella, June 11, 2016:

I am sending visual evidence of our gardening success, thanks, in part, to the $250 grant we received from the PTA.  There are seven students who are actively involved in ordering and transporting organic soil, planting crops and doing daily watering.  These students are also picking up trash around the area and attracting friends to tend to the garden.  We were grateful to receive $100 from a Wakefield parent to also buy many of our plants (which we purchased from the PTA plant sale) and part of a gardening hose.  I have spent ~ 75 of my own money on fencing and tools.  The PTA grant covered the majority of the soil purchase, a onetime expense.  Our garden would not be up and running this year without it; we would still be fundraising.
The Wakefield Lifeskills class agreed to make plant markers for our garden and I left it up to them to decide what materials to use.  They collected river rocks and painted/sealed them for the garden.  I paid for the materials and they did a beautiful job, as you can see.  We will be donating the majority of our harvest to AFAC over the summer.  The garden has already provided a great deal of enrichment, exposure to nature and discussion about a variety of environmental concerns.  Many thanks for your support this year.
